What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a tool that is as old as humankind. It taps into the person's unlimited potential that can bring out profound and positive changes. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention that allows people to use their minds more powerfully and effectively. Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation and focus where the mind is more open to suggestion that can bring about positive changes in the mind, body, and spirit. Most people describe their experience of hypnosis as feeling safe, relaxed, and peaceful. When people are in hypnosis they are in control the entire time. The hypnotist is the guide and some people are more open to suggestion than others. This may have to do with fears, resistance, or misconceptions about hypnosis. At InnerSpiral, the hypnotist meets with the client for an extended period of time and talks about misconceptions and any other questions related to hypnosis. Hypnosis can often be thought of as the state between wakefulness and sleep.

How Does It work?

Hypnosis works by quieting the conscious mind which allows for the subconscious mind to do healing work on the issue at hand. While in a hypnotic state the hypnotist offers suggestions that are more readily acceptable by the subconscious mind to bring about positive changes.

Hypnotists encourage their clients to use their imagination; mental imagery is powerful and healing especially in a focused state of attention. The mind uses the imagery to assist people in bringing about the very thing they are imagining. Once we create a mental picture of the desired change, we are more able to bring this change into manifestation.

Next, hypnotists present positive suggestions to clients while they are in hypnosis. In a state of focused attention, suggestions that are compatible with what the client wants seem to have a more powerful affect on the mind and the behavior of the person.

Lastly, hypnosis may be used for understanding underlying motives or to find out if past events or experiences are associated with the problem.

Hypnosis bypasses the critical conscious mind which can often defeat what we know to be in our best interest. The subconscious is the center of our creativity, problem solving ability, and automatic bodily functions. When the conscious mind is bypassed through the use of hypnosis, real and lasting changes occur in the person's life. Once the critical part of the conscious mind is bypassed, the hypnotist can speak directly to the subconscious mind. In other words, your subconscious mind is the real brains behind the operation.
